WWII History seeks the best in historical writing. Submissions should
be well written and well researched. Feature stories generally run from
1,500 words to 7,000 words and sometimes longer. Departments run from
2,000 to 3,000 words. We cover all aspects of World War II on any continent
or ocean. We consider queries, but with first-time writers we do not make
commitments until we see the whole manuscript.
Scholarship
Stories must be historically accurate. We do not publish footnotes but
welcome them with your manuscript in order to check facts ourselves and
to discern your sources.
Illustrations
Authors should include illustration suggestions and/or sources for illustrations.
The easier it is to locate illustrations, the sooner your story will be
published.
Format
All submissions should be on standard (8.5 x 11) typed, double-spaced
pages. Each should contain the author’s name, address, telephone
number, and e-mail address on the first page, not on a cover letter alone.
Any that are not accompanied by an SASE will be discarded when no longer
considered by us; those with an SASE will be returned if we are not going
to use them. Submissions should be available on disk or via e-mail when
called for.
Payment
Payment is generally based on story length. We pay on acceptance within
60 days of the return of a signed contract. Contributing writers receive
two complementary copies of the issue in which their stories appear.
Departments
We run three departments. “Profiles,” generally a profile
on an individual; “Ordnance,” generally a description of a
single weapon, aircraft, etc.; “Top Secret,” a story on intelligence
matters, spying, secret war, and so on; “Insight,” a story
on some other, sometimes little-known aspect of World War II. Our book
reviews are written by regular freelancers.
Rights
We buy first world serial rights only and require that the story not be
resold for two years.
